For fiscal year 2012, Muscatine-based HNI Corporation is reporting sales of $2.0 billion, a 9.3 percent increase from prior year, and net income of $49.0 million, a 6.5 percent increase from the prior year. Stan Askren, HNI’s chairman, president and CEO, says the company continues to compete well in its markets and has delivered solid results in a challenging environment.

Congressman Dave Loebsack is reacting to the United States Postal Service announcement that it will discontinue Saturday letter delivery in August because of red ink. Loebsack says Congress has tied the Postal Service’s hands by requiring it to pre-fund retirement health benefits to the tune of more than $50 billion over 10 years. He says no other agency or business has to do that.

It’s just in time for Valentine’s Day. Muscatine Humane Society volunteers are making jumbo caramel apples dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with candy confections as a fund-raising activity. The apples are decoratively wrapped for gift giving. Each apple is $15, payable in advance. Orders are being taken until Monday, February 11th, with deliveries on Valentine’s Day.
 

If you live in Iowa, you turned out in big numbers to vote last November. Nearly seven of 10 eligible Iowa voters cast ballots in the presidential race. Only four other states -- Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado and New Hampshire -- had a higher turnout. Iowa’s turnout was more than 1.5 billion people. Nationwide, voting was down.
