Muscatine is one of 12 cities competing to become Blue Zones demonstration sites. The private-public Blue Zones initiative offers expert assistance to selected communities on making healthty choices. The next six Blue Zones sites will be announced Jan. 30th at Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Des Moines.

Declining student enrollment is causing a nearly half-million dollar deficit in the Columbus Community School District. As a result, the school board has voted to make cuts that include the layoff of teachers, aides and others.

West Liberty-based West Liberty Foods, manufacturer of sliced deli meats and quick frozen products for both food service and retail use, has completed the installation of a Hiperbaric High-Pressure Pasteurization System in its Mount Pleasant facility. The system uses water under high pressure to destroy harmful food bacteria while maintaining fresh food characteristics.

The 21st edition of the Winter Iowa Games kicks off in Dubuque on Saturday and Sunday. The 2013 Winter Iowa Games will take place in 11 communities over a four-week period.
