Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre continues its West Liberty performing season
with FREEDOM STAR: Gertie’s Journey on the Underground Railroad.
Performances will take place Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2:00 and 4:00 P.M. at the New
Strand Theater in West Liberty.
The production features three large marionettes porte (hand-held puppets),
along with rod and shadow puppets, and hand-dyed scenery. It tells a dramatic
and moving story, based on local history, of
a young slave girl who escapes from a farm in Missouri and makes her way
through Iowa on her way to freedom.
Honoring the 150th anniversary year of the beginning of the Civil War, this
play uses regional history references, including information about John Brown
during the years he spent in Iowa.
It also recounts an event that actually took place in West Liberty in March of
1859, when John Brown sent a boxcar load of slaves from the West Liberty
depot to Chicago, Detroit, and eventual freedom in Canada.
The performance on the January 20th serves as the springboard for an original play about John Brown and West Liberty, which will be performed by community volunteers on March 24th.
