On Friday, the Iowa Supreme Court granted 22-year-old Robert Howard a new trial because a detective improperly promised leniency for his confession.

In 2010 Howard confessed to sexually abusing his girlfriend's 17-month-old son. A district court denied Howard's motion to have the confession suppressed during his jury trial, and he was found guilty of second-degree sexual abuse and child endangerment.

An appeals court affirmed the conviction and a 25-year prison sentence. But Iowa's top court says a new trial is in order.
