A lack of accidents in Wapello Iowa will prevent its city police department
from obtaining computer software that would allow the department’s officers to
access Iowa DOT licensing information directly from their squad cars.
Police Chief Wayne Crump told the city council Thursday night there had been
only three or four accidents in the city this year. The DOT requires a larger
number of investigated accidents before it will release the software.
Crump said a $50,000 U.S. Department of Justice grant was used to purchase
and install the computers in the city’s three squad cars earlier this year, and the
same grant program funded the DOT’s software development.
