Deconstruction of the old Jefferson Elementary School began April 18th. Temporary fencing around the old school will help secure the demolition site, providing a safe separation for Central and Jefferson students and staff. Staff, students, and families should maintain safe distances from the demolition site, staying clear of fenced areas before, during, and after the school day.
Demolition work will take place during the normal school day. Steps will be taken to minimize disruption to school schedules, including morning drop-off and afternoon pickup. Parents are encouraged to be alert for additional construction traffic in the area and allow extra time for morning drop-off and afternoon pickup. Parents should use designated pickup and drop-off areas on 9th and Cedar Streets.
According to the demolition contractors and architects, all known hazardous materials have been removed from the old Jefferson School and the site is ready for demolition. Demolition contractors and Muscatine School District staff will hold a special community meeting Monday, April 25th, 2016, at 4:30 p.m. in the new Jefferson Elementary School Commons to provide an update on the demolition process. This meeting is open to the public.
