Muscatine Second Ward Candidates

Name: Michael Rehwaldt

Office running for: Second Ward City Council seat

Current Position: Second Ward City Council

What are the biggest issues you feel should be addressed?

Protecting the citizens’ tax dollars. In the last seven years, there has been no tax levy increase. That is phenomenal. You got to give staff a lot of credit for doing more with less. We give the order every year, no tax increase. And we find a way to make it work. I also believe public safety is a number one priority. There’s this culture in the fire department that they fight to see who gets to be the first one through the door when there’s a structure fire. They all want to be the first one through the door to attack the fire. And it’s that kind of attitude that makes them real winners. I want to provide the police and fire departments with the right resources to grow the departments and to protect and serve our community. I also look forward to the development of a potential container port on the Mississippi River.

What steps would you take to correct/ impact these issues?

I believe we are taking the right steps economically to keep taxes low. Our city staff is constantly finding creative solutions to manage city budgets and keep our costs down. We have to continue to reward this fiscal responsibility with allocating the proper resources to do the jobs that need to be done by city staff.

What else would you like voters to know about you?

My dad, Charles, was active in everything in the community. He was just a good example to follow, a good man, and I always admired him. I hope to be as conscientious as he was. He never did the easy thing. He always made sure he did the right thing.
