On a night where tremendous basketball was played the Muscatine class 1971 stole the show at the Muskie Booster Club hosted the 26th annual cake auction on Friday night. The class of ’71 will be celebrating their 45th class reunion this summer but they started the party early by honoring the 54 classmates who have passed away and made a record setting $15,000 purchase of a cake. The cake was not even made yet, it was a box of cake mix and a tub of frosting. The previous record was $5,001. The booster club auctioned off Super Hero themed cakes to local residence and business. Sara Carlson, the event’s organizer, estimated that at least $46,000 was raised at the event. The booster club supports extracurricular activities for the Muscatine Community School District.
The Boys Basketball team lost a heartbreaker to Davenport Central 65 to 64 Davenport Central made 2 free throws with 2 seconds left to take the lead, Joe Wieskamp had a game winning shot rim out as time expired. Wieskamp led the way for Muscatine with 19 points, Ben Morgan scored 14 points and Matt Shellabarger had 12 pts in the Muskie loss Muscatine is now 10 – 5 on the year. Muscatine clinched the #2 seed and a first round bye in their region with their win over Clinton earlier in the week.
The Girls team defeated Davenport Central 62 – 30. Muscatine had a dominating performance led by Abby Rush and Paige Miller who led Muscatine with 16 points each. Muscatine moves to 5-7 in conference play.
